SRV Record Lookup

An SRV record says where a service runs: its host, port, priority and weight. The name encodes the service and protocol, as in _sip._tcp.example.com, so clients can find a server without being told its address.

About SRV records

What the answer tells you

  • The value reads: weight, port, target. Priority is shown in its own column, and the lowest is tried first.
  • Weight shares the load between records of equal priority: one with weight 60 gets three times the traffic of one with 20.
  • Look up the full name, including the leading _service._protocol labels. A plain domain name has no SRV records.
As written in a zone file

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The lookup shows nothing for my domain
SRV records live at a service name, not at the domain itself. Enter the full name, such as _sip._tcp.example.com or _minecraft._tcp.example.com.
Which services use SRV records?
SIP and VoIP, XMPP chat, LDAP and Kerberos in Active Directory, CalDAV and CardDAV, mail client autodiscovery, and game servers such as Minecraft, among others.
What is DNS propagation?
DNS does not push changes out. Each resolver keeps an answer for its TTL and only asks again once that runs out, so after a change different resolvers return old and new answers for a while. When every column here agrees with the authoritative one, the change has reached them.
What does the authoritative column show?
The answer from one of the domain's own nameservers, which never comes from a cache. It shows what the zone says right now; the resolver columns show what the internet has cached.
